With over 22 years of experience as a psychologist and sports scientist, Tim Harkness has worked closely with a diverse group of elite athletes, including the Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra and the Saudi Arabia national football team. He’s also Head of Sports Science and Psychology at Chelsea Football Club.

Tim grew up in South Africa during the 19070's and 80's and observed the successful political change from apartheid regime to democracy. The committed dialogue managed to resolve a lot of conflict there. Throughout his career, he’s learnt how powerful communicating effectively is. When we disagree, it is often more productive to stop talking about the topic and start talking about the rules of engagement. He’s recently published his first book, ‘10 Rules for Talking: An Expert's Guide to Mastering Difficult Conversations’.

In this episode we talk about his upbringing during the apartheid regime, difficult conversations, the power of focus, stress-testing truth and the true skills to master communication.
